Coaching is a method for helping organizations and individuals improve performance, set goals, manage change, acquire new skills, and promote success stories. Coaching is a relationship based on conversation, reflection, and action.
Coaching is about development, so that individuals and groups can perform at their very highest levels. It is non-judgmental, interactive, responsive, flexible and empowering. Coaching is an intentional process that creates an environment for growth and effective action.Coaching encourages and motivates individuals and groups to set goals and overcome obstacles to success. Coaching is not counseling, mentoring or training.
Coaches are observers and supportive partners who assist with sorting through options to determine next steps in order to move forward. Organizations and individuals will find at times the need to refocus, renew, and manage change. The coaching process is focused on supporting personal development. Most often it is a multiphase or tiered facilitated sequence that includes:
- Interview, Survey, and/or Assessment
- Design, Planning, Goal Setting
- Guided Practice and Support
- Independent Practice
- Review and Evaluation
Coaches working in partnership with clients can help increase awareness about perspectives, beliefs, values and limiting behaviors. Coaching emphasizes unique potential, complements other improvement processes, and can have sustainable and long-term benefits. The coaching process is both reflective and active engagement and your coach will play various roles as a listener, scout, and guide.
Individuals and organizations can 1) identify where you are right now, 2) determine where you want or need to be, 3) explore what lies in between and, 4) develop practical strategies and set goals to help you get there.
During the coaching process organizations and individuals will develop action plans with specific goals and date-certain accountabilities that focus on achievable, practical and effective results.
The coaching model outlined here is based in part on an individual coaching model designed by Dr. Donald Krukow.
